Its certainly the month for marrying! What with all the Royal nuptials reminders everywhere puts me in a Cinderella frame of mind. I think I may have mentioned this before but ALL TIME FAVOURITE EVER STORY – Cinderella -

Whats not to love?  A beautiful big dress made from magic (swoon), a glass slipper (Ooooh shoes!!) oh and yeah there’s a Prince too. I used to dream of having my own dressmaking business so I could create the all time greatest Cinderella gown. But the dress is the least of a bride to be’s concerns, setting the impression and tone of the wedding with the invites is where this fairytale begins…

Once upon a time beautiful bride to be contacted Extinct Design to ask about our handmade card Guest Designer – Naomi Made This. The bride in question had planned a beautiful rustic wedding nestled in the lush Welsh country side, the bride chose for her invites custom made hearts and buttons from Naomi Made This.

She wanted buttons, and hearts and unique handmadeness what could be better? And surly fit for a princess?

I think the entire card industry must of taken a collective sigh when the first whisper of the green eco friendly recycled wave came a-lapping at their shores… its really a great thing as it focuses creativity to strive even higher and encourage more buying of second hand and vintage stock…. for some families I know the buying and receiving of cards is some what a sport, with more than one being sent at anyone time from the same person (well I needed to send a funny one and one to show I care?!)

Cards are really such a nice thing to receive and when conserving paper the best choice around it to buy vintage or handmade.

I spoke to fabulous vintage finder of thing things Sophie from Pineapple Ice Bucket who has a beauty of a shop in the village of Brockenhurst in the New Forest, Hampshire.

Sophie: When searching for fun and funky vintage stock, I have been lucky enough to meet a supplier of original 1970s greeting cards, in fact he has a large warehouse full of them, boxed up and ready to give… Left over’s from a second business back in the day, which got left behind when another venture took off.

A chance encounter means I now have a very large supply of these amazing cards at my fingertips… all unused, most sealed and in a vast array of different designs… For example, we have a 1970s hippy rocker, a psychedelic donkey, girls with flowers in their hair and the most amazing fabric designs (and that’s just one range) I have large ones, which are ideal for framing and can be attributed to some successful artists and fabric designers, a ‘cut out’ range, which is great for big and small kids (why not make your own 3D elephant or dress a hippy for example)? But my favourites have to be the kitsch American kids designs… complete with the cheesiest printed messages inside, which include- ‘hi, flower child‘, ‘doggone you’re sweet’ or ‘I’d go way out for you’.

Having them in my shop, I hear all the comments… people either remember them from the first time (bringing back memories of a fifth birthday party, a special granny or other happy times), wanting to share the memories with friends, either of a similar age, or new generations who squeal with delight at the sight of the psychedelic colours and kitsch wording.

And why not frame the card after it has been received, the ultimate recycling.

…and we love it!!!

New to Extinct Design, the perfectly formed hand stitched felt heart cards from naomi made this!

We can’t quite put our finger on whether its the mix of layered colours on pretty material remnants or the perfect sizing and shiny buttons that make these stand out from the rest – whatever it is the combination just shines through…

I can’t decide which is my favourite! Tell which is yours!!

How to: Easy 30min Stack-Up’n’ Sewn Cards

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Here is my first “How To” and I’m starting off easy!

This little project has bags of room to play with colour and shape and is perfect for kids!

Time needed: less than 1/2 hour

You’ll need:

Scissors

Needle & Thread

Old Buttons

Scraps different coloured & types of fabric

Old card, magazines

1. Cut out circles of fabric. You can also do a simple flower shape, stars or hearts too.

Stack them on top of each other, using the different materials to make the pattern you want.

2. Simple stitches to bind a few layers together with a contrasting thread.

3. Using a sharp needle, sew a button in the middle of each stack to secure.

4. Find some images you would like to use as a backdrop and cut out. Tip! the simpler the backdrop the better. You can then fix the magazines cuttings to some card, either recycled from cereal box or bought from craft store.

5. Arrange your flower stacks on the card. This is a nice bit.

6. Then “ta-daaa” You’re done! Well done :D

Hope you liked what you made – let me know, post a comment on how yours turned out!

These make great little gift tags for Christmas! Try making some out of paper and sticking the layers together too!
