Ode to a skirt
You have lived with me like a sister
But now time’s we part
Your beauty is incomparable and likened to some art…

I love selling vintage clothing and do view each piece as mini rare works of art and none more so than the skirt above, from my own private collection sold to my lovely new model,  (I don’t think I could of parted with it to anyone else!)

It’s a striking piece and reminds me of still life paintings from the Middle Ages…
Flemish painter – Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568 – January 13, 1625) sometimes called “Flower” Brueghel, and “Paradise” Brueghel, of which the latter two were derived from his floral still life’s which were his favored subjects. Packed with symbolism, flowers representing both the beauty, fragility and ever turning circle of life. Often in the paintings there would be insects, such as for butterflies represents transformation and resurrection while the ant hard work and attention to the harvest, often dead or dying insects (and later sculls, watches, candles burning down, fading fruit) really enforcing that life is transient, capturing memento’s of beauty…

The flowers in themselves too offer symbolic meaning, which we are often aware of but have no real recollection how we know what they mean; rose (Virgin Mary, transience, Venus, love); lily (virginity, purity of mind or justice); tulip (showiness, nobility); sunflower (faithfulness, divine love, devotion); violet (modesty, reserve, humility); columbine (melancholy); poppy (power, sleep, death).

So many paintings were produced in this way with the dark background, giving more vibrancy and “life” to the still lifes. It was Monet and Renoir

Below are pieces by Jan Frans van Dael was another Flemish painter – whos works I think are particularly stunning!

Spring I salute thee…

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

It’s only mid February and I’m feeling somewhat Springlike! The weather along the north Wales coast has been clear and crisp with all the promise of new life and spring flowers. That coupled with the adorable new range of hats from Ollie&Agnes – Little Veg Patch -  has kicked me out of my Winter slumber giving life to new ideas sprouting forth, growing…

A close friend of mine is due to have her first baby girl in a couple of weeks and I’ve been on the look out for something special for the nursery. I love the range from Organic Toy Company… in the organic garden, fruit and veg shaped toys starting from £6.99. Ethically Made, natural and organic.  Not only is there a super cute , super soft looking range of toys available, the textiles used are made from certified 100% organically grown/produced fibres that are hypoallergenic.

I’m completely in love with the organic cotton butterfly which sleeps in a removable chrysalis drawstring bag. It has a little red hat with green peaks as feelers and softly shaped yellow wings. Once emerged from its chrysalis, it has a green body shaped to a gentle point, with little blue arms. HOW CUTE?! Such an adorable item. (Ok am I gushing too much? Just looks so peaceful.)

I was lucky enough to actually watch a butterfly hatch from its chrysalis when I was little, that whole process has held such a fascination for me. Like unwrapping a wonderful gift, coming up with a new design or hatching a master plan (Mwha ha ha!) that excitement and potential is thrilling. A perfect gift I think the for a newly born girl.

The site is bursting with interesting information, links and set out in such a way that it is easy to find the perfect gift quickly!

With my head full of fruit, veg and garden beauty I have been reminiscing about the Ladybird Books ~ the Garden Gang ~and their fabulous scratchy felt tip drawings. They stood out to me on my book shelf as their drawings were really free, sometimes imperfect and not dissimilar to my own… I don’t think I realised at the time they had been written and drawn by someone who was only a couple of years older than me! Jayne Fisher – who at 9 years old was the youngest author ever to write for Ladybird Books. Some of the rarer titles are back in demand, fetching high price on Amazon and ebay.

Don’t forget check out Ollie&Agnes’s new range of Little Veg Patch hand-knitted hats. Perfect for little helpers in your early spring garden.

How to: Easy 30min Stack-Up’n’ Sewn Cards

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Here is my first “How To” and I’m starting off easy!

This little project has bags of room to play with colour and shape and is perfect for kids!

Time needed: less than 1/2 hour

You’ll need:

Scissors

Needle & Thread

Old Buttons

Scraps different coloured & types of fabric

Old card, magazines

1. Cut out circles of fabric. You can also do a simple flower shape, stars or hearts too.

Stack them on top of each other, using the different materials to make the pattern you want.

2. Simple stitches to bind a few layers together with a contrasting thread.

3. Using a sharp needle, sew a button in the middle of each stack to secure.

4. Find some images you would like to use as a backdrop and cut out. Tip! the simpler the backdrop the better. You can then fix the magazines cuttings to some card, either recycled from cereal box or bought from craft store.

5. Arrange your flower stacks on the card. This is a nice bit.

6. Then “ta-daaa” You’re done! Well done :D

Hope you liked what you made – let me know, post a comment on how yours turned out!

These make great little gift tags for Christmas! Try making some out of paper and sticking the layers together too!
